- Your Questions Answered,How To Start Potty Training

This page has suggestions to guide you if you are wondering exactly how and when to start.

The advice is divided into 3 sections:

Finding the right time - toilet training can be an upheaval in itself, so you don't need outside pressures as well.

Preparation - what you need to buy beforehand.

Getting Going - how are you going to proceed with training?

Finding The Right Time To Start Potty Training

Timing is important. You don't want to begin toilet training if your toddler is going through a major upheaval - or is simply not physically or emotionally ready.

If you are lucky enough for your start potty training timing to be during the warmer months of the year, then you will usually end up with less washing, As your toddler will be wearing less.

The potty can be with you in the garden, for the now moment.

If you have the potty with you and not mention it, or make a fuss about it, your toddler will be inquisitive and ask you about it.

That way it has become his idea to use it, tomorrow will be a different day!

Preparation

It is a good idea to sit down and think about what preparation you want to make before beginning potty training. This might include:

Buying 1 or 2 potties to familiarize the potty trainee with the tools of her trade - one for upstairs, one for downstairs. Getting 2 identical ones prevents protests later on of the 'want other potty' variety. If it is important to you that your child uses the bathroom during training, put a potty there right from the start.

Big boy/girl pants are very often a great motivator when getting going. You might want to arrange a special trip with your child to buy these the day before you embark on toilet training.

Rewards - I got some special Bob The Builder stickers in anticipation of my toddler's first triumph on the pot. Reward charts are also popular with many parents. See

Carpet Cleaner - if you know that poo on the carpet is going to cause you stress, have a look around for one of these machines.

We were given a second-hand cleaner that made life much easier for everyone during one period when accidents were an almost daily occurrence. Grab yourself a bargain - look at eBay, ads in the local newspaper, or car boot/yard sales.
